Tiger sharks at Tiger Point & Tiger Wall — Fuvahmulah, southern Maldives · DiveSafariMaster

Why Fuvahmulah — the Facts Behind the Tiger Sharks

Fuvahmulah is a one-island atoll in the southern Maldives, 1.5 hours by domestic flight from Malé. No lagoon separates it from open ocean — the island sits directly in deep water, acting as a natural seamount that pulls in pelagic species year-round. Tiger sharks have been resident at Tiger Point and Tiger Wall for decades, drawn by a fishing tradition that pre-dates dive tourism: fishermen have been discarding tuna offcuts at the harbour entrance for generations, and a resident shark population formed around that pattern. Over 250–300 individual sharks are now identified in the Tiger Harbour photogrammetry database. No feeding attractant is used on dives.

Site Depth Primary species Season Peak visibility
Tiger Point 5–7 m Tiger sharks Year-round Up to 45 m (Jan–Apr)
Tiger Wall Max 30 m (AOWD) Tiger sharks, silvertips, whitetips Year-round 25 m+
Reef sites Max 30 m (AOWD) Grey reef, silvertip, yellowfin tuna, GT, barracuda Daily 25 m+
Open water Variable Thresher sharks, hammerheads, oceanic mantas May–Jul 25 m+
Open water Variable Whale sharks, mola mola Oct–Dec 25 m+

Certification & Experience Requirements

Tiger Point runs at 5–7 m — shallow, but that does not lower the certification bar. AOWD with 30 logged dives is the minimum for the full package, including Tiger Wall (max 30 m). OWD divers can join the Tiger Point dive after passing an in-water evaluation on Day 2; reef sites are then capped at 18 m. The evaluation is not a formality — guides decide on the day based on buoyancy and calm.

Year-round · Fuvahmulah, Southern Maldives
🦈 250–300 Resident Tiger Sharks. No Feeding. No Season.
Tiger Point and Tiger Wall sit at 5–7 m — shallow enough for extended observation time and clear photography. The resident population has been verified year-round by photogrammetry research.

In-Water Behavior — What the Guides Enforce

Tiger sharks are apex predators. Every tiger shark dive is preceded by a full briefing from Fuvahmulah Scuba Club guides — local and international, PADI and SSI certified. The rules below are not optional. Divers who break protocol are removed from the water.

🦈 No touching, no chasing — never reach toward a shark or move to intercept its path. Any contact with marine life ends the dive

📸 No flash photography — at Tiger Point and Tiger Wall without exception. Natural light only

🤿 Stay with the group — guide-to-diver ratio: 1:4 in low season, 1:6 in high season. Follow the guide’s signals, not your own instinct

💨 Control breathing rate — slow, steady breaths reduce bubble output and maintain calm around the sharks

⬆️ No erratic movement or ascents — sudden speed changes draw attention. All ascents at standard 9 m/min; safety stop observed every time

📏 Maintain distance — guides indicate where to position. No diver should ever be between a shark and its intended direction of travel

“The tiger shark came within 2 metres during the safety stop at Tiger Point — nobody expected it that close at 6 m. We did it four more times that week.”

FAQ

Questions we get every week

What certification do I need for tiger shark diving at Fuvahmulah?
Minimum AOWD with 30 logged dives for the full package, including Tiger Wall (max 30 m). OWD divers can join the Tiger Point dive (5–7 m) after passing an in-water evaluation on Day 2. Reef sites are capped at 18 m for OWD divers. The evaluation assesses buoyancy and composure — guides decide on the day.
Are tiger shark encounters guaranteed at Tiger Point?
Tiger sharks are resident year-round at Tiger Point and Tiger Wall — over 250–300 individual sharks are identified in the Tiger Harbour photogrammetry database. This is a resident population, not a migratory one. Encounters happen on every dive day. No feeding attractant is used. Wildlife cannot carry a 100% guarantee, but Fuvahmulah is one of the most consistent tiger shark destinations globally.
Is it safe to dive with tiger sharks?
Tiger sharks are apex predators — every dive is briefed in full before entry. Rules enforced by guides: no touching, no chasing, no blocking the shark’s path, no flash photography, no gloves at Tiger Point or Tiger Wall. Guide-to-diver ratio: 1:4 low season, 1:6 high season. Emergency O₂ is aboard every dive boat. Nearest decompression chamber: Malé. Dive insurance is mandatory for all participants.
What other species will I see besides tiger sharks?
Year-round at reef sites: silvertip sharks, whitetip reef sharks, grey reef sharks, yellowfin tuna, giant trevally, and barracuda. Seasonal additions: thresher sharks and scalloped hammerheads (May–Jul), oceanic manta rays (May–Jul), possible whale sharks and mola mola (Oct–Dec). Fuvahmulah’s open-ocean position — no lagoon, direct deep-water access — makes pelagic diversity here unlike a standard Maldives resort dive.
What’s the best time of year to visit Fuvahmulah?
Tiger sharks are present year-round — there is no bad month. Jan–Apr gives the highest visibility (up to 45 m) and driest conditions, with stronger currents. May–Jul adds thresher sharks, hammerheads, and oceanic mantas alongside the tiger sharks. Oct–Dec brings possible whale shark and mola mola sightings. Conditions are more moderate in the low season, making it a good option for divers who prefer calmer water.
What are the cultural rules I need to know for Fuvahmulah?
Fuvahmulah is a local island, not a resort. Modest dress is required in all public areas — shoulders and knees covered. Bikinis are only permitted on boats or designated beach spots. Alcohol is not available on the island — Maldives law applies to local islands. Shops close during prayer times. Photography of local residents: always ask first. The island is quiet and authentic — these cultural norms are a standard part of visiting local Maldivian communities.
