FAQ
Questions we get every week
Which itinerary is right for me as an Open Water diver?▼
The Pelagic Trail is the only itinerary open to Open Water divers. It runs two parallel dive plans — the Blue Trail at 15–20m for Open Water divers and the Red Trail to 40m for advanced divers. Both trails dive the same sites simultaneously: Daedalus Reef, Sataya and Elphinstone. Open Water divers encounter hammerheads, oceanic whitetips and wild dolphins on the Blue Trail every week. The BDE, Golden Mix and Deep South itineraries all require Advanced Open Water with 50 logged dives minimum.
What is the best time of year to dive the Red Sea?▼
Every month. Sharks are present at Daedalus, Elphinstone and Brothers Islands year-round — there is no closed season. What changes is water temperature: 22°C in winter, 30°C in summer, and air temperature follows the same pattern. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most comfortable periods — warm enough for easy diving, pleasant evenings on deck, and fewer liveaboards at the sites simultaneously. The guide and the itinerary matter more than the month. Choose the dates that fit your schedule.
Is it safe to dive with sharks in the Red Sea?▼
Yes. All recorded fatal shark incidents in Egypt over the past 25 years involved swimmers and snorkellers at inshore beach areas — not scuba divers at offshore marine park sites like Daedalus, Elphinstone or Brothers Islands. Over 500 divers per year encounter sharks on our BDE itinerary alone without serious incident. Every DiveSafariMaster departure includes a full shark species briefing before any dive at a shark site — covering exactly how to behave around each species. The key is a certified operator, a proper briefing and correct behaviour underwater.
How do I get to Marsa Alam Marina from Europe?▼
Direct flights operate to Marsa Alam International Airport (RMF, 45 min) and Hurghada airport (HRG, 3 hrs) — airport transfers included within the defined timeframe from Hurghada airport. Flight time from Europe approximately 5 hours. Direct from London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Milan. Hurghada has more flight connections from more European cities if your departure airport does not fly direct to Marsa Alam. Full transfer conditions →
Can I complete my Advanced Open Water course during the trip?▼
Yes. AOWD courses are available aboard on selected departures — you complete the certification during the week and join the full itinerary dives once qualified. This is the most practical way to upgrade if you want to join BDE or Golden Mix but currently hold Open Water only. Confirm course availability when booking as space per departure is limited. Deep Diver, Navigation and Nitrox courses are also available aboard. Available courses →
Do I need to bring my own dive equipment?▼
No. Full scuba equipment rental is available aboard MY JP Marine — BCD, regulators, wetsuit, mask, fins, boots, SMB and dive computer. You can travel with cabin baggage only. Book rental equipment in advance when you confirm your trip to guarantee availability in your size. Tanks, weights and weight belts are included in the trip price and are not part of the rental.
Why book directly with DiveSafariMaster instead of through an agency?▼
When you book direct you pay the boat owner’s price with no agency markup added. You communicate directly with the team that runs the trips — the people who know the sites, the conditions and the boats. Any question before or after booking goes straight to us, answered personally. Agencies typically add 20% to the trip price and add a communication layer between you and the operator. We accept card payment directly at divesafarimaster.com.
Is Egypt safe to travel to in 2026?▼
Yes. The Red Sea coast is in northeast Africa — more than 1,500 kilometres from any regional conflict zone. Marsa Alam and Hurghada are established tourist destinations that received a combined record number of visitors in 2025. Egypt recorded 19 million tourists in 2025. Cairo airport handles over 600 flights per day across 59 airlines. The Red Sea resorts have not been affected by regional events. European tour operators including TUI, Thomas Cook and Neckermann continue to sell Red Sea holidays without restriction.
