How we dive
Our principles
Three rules that apply on every shark dive, every week, without exception.
🚫
Natural encounter only
We never use bait, chum or any attractant to bring sharks to divers. Encounters happen because the animal chooses to approach. This is the only ethical way to dive with sharks.
🤝
Nothing disturbs the animal
No touching. No chasing. No blocking a shark’s path. Every diver is briefed on positioning and signals before entering the water at every shark site.
📋
We report what we see
Unusual behaviour, new individuals, unusual aggregations — all observations are shared with local and international shark research organisations.
Conservation support
All shark dives aboard MY JPMarine follow the behavioural safety protocol published by redseasharks.org — guidelines developed by Dr Elke Bojanowski based on 20 years of direct field research at Elphinstone, Daedalus and Brothers Islands.
We actively support marine protection associations such as:

The headline site of the Pelagic Trail Deluxe. Two full days here gives you the best odds of hammerhead encounters in the Red Sea — south plateau at 15–30m, early morning dives are the priority. Also home to oceanic whitetips, shoals of barracuda, tuna, and dramatic walls to the north, west and east.
Daedalus Lighthouse — built in 1863, the historic British lighthouse on the island. Marine police normally allow divers to visit and photograph it. Night dives at Daedalus are not available — prohibited by marine park regulations for safety reasons.
Sataya & Fury Shoal
Dolphin House · 2 full days diving + 2 night dives
Middle South Red Sea
Sataya Dolphin House is a large lagoon with a sandy bottom — home to a resident pod of spinner dolphins. Every morning we snorkel in the lagoon as the dolphins arrive. Scuba diving is not permitted inside the lagoon, but dolphins frequently appear on the surrounding reef dives.
Fury Shoal sites — Maksur, Claudia, Malahy, Abu Galawa — offer spectacular coral gardens, dramatic caves, and excellent night dives. Two nights at anchor gives us time to explore the full reef system, including rare coral formations only reachable by liveaboard.
Elphinstone Reef
Shagra · 1–2 days diving
North of Marsa Alam
One of the Red Sea’s star dive sites. The reef runs 350m north to south with two plateaus at –20m and –40m — the primary points for oceanic whitetip observations. The southern plateau descends to 40m then drops off into open water. Hammerheads also appear here on early morning dives.
Unpredictable currents at this site — divers must follow guide instructions closely. The Arabic name Shagra (Blondie) comes from the bright red mountain visible on the shore when moored at the reef.
Abu Dabbab
Dugong Bay · Snorkeling + reef dives · Friday
🦕 Dugong Site
Abu Dabbab is the most reliable dugong site on the Egyptian Red Sea coast. The bay has a sheltered seagrass bed in 3–8m of water — dugongs (sea cows) feed here regularly throughout the year. We visit on Friday morning for a snorkeling session directly above the seagrass. No scuba required; masks and fins provided. Dugong encounters are wildlife — not guaranteed, but the site is scouted by our guides before entry.
The surrounding reef also offers solid scuba diving — turtles are common, and the coral formations in the outer bay attract a wide variety of reef fish. Friday at Abu Dabbab is a full morning’s activity combining snorkeling and diving for the whole group, before returning to Marsa Alam for Saturday checkout.
Questions about the sites or the dugong? Our guides dive this route every week.
Pelagic Trail Deluxe is ideal for mixed groups — Red Trail and Blue Trail planning allows beginners and experienced divers to share the same sites with different dive plans.
Will I see hammerheads — and what are the odds with the dugong on the same trip?
Daedalus Reef is one of the most reliable hammerhead sites in the Red Sea, and the Pelagic Trail Deluxe spends two full days there. Morning dives on the south plateau at 15–30m give the highest encounter odds. Up to 5 shark species are possible in a single week. The dugong snorkeling at Abu Dabbab on Friday is a separate activity — sightings are wildlife, not guaranteed, but Abu Dabbab is the most consistent dugong site on the Egyptian coast and the site is checked by our guides before entry.
Can I join with Open Water certification?
Yes, Open Water divers are welcome on the Pelagic Trail Deluxe. We recommend completing AOWD aboard during the trip — this unlocks the Daedalus deep drop-off at 40m and the full Elphinstone plateaus. If not, OWD divers must dive with a buddy committed to a 20m maximum depth limit. The dugong snorkeling at Abu Dabbab requires no certification — just a mask and fins. Contact us before booking to discuss the best option for your level.
Can we swim with dolphins at Sataya — and how does the dugong snorkeling work?
Yes. Sataya Dolphin House has a resident pod of spinner dolphins. We snorkel in the lagoon every morning as the dolphins arrive. Scuba diving is not permitted inside the lagoon, but dolphins frequently appear on the surrounding reef dives. The dugong snorkeling at Abu Dabbab on Friday is a separate morning session — you snorkel in 3–8m of water directly above the seagrass bed where dugongs feed. Masks and fins are provided. No scuba gear required for either activity.
What is the best season for the Pelagic Trail Deluxe?
The Pelagic Trail Deluxe runs year-round with Saturday departures every week. Water temperatures range from 22°C to 30°C, visibility regularly above 30 metres. Hammerhead activity at Daedalus peaks in spring and autumn. The Sataya dolphin pod is resident — encounters are reliable year-round. Dugongs at Abu Dabbab are present throughout the year. For guaranteed warm water and maximum dive days, June to September is peak season.
What is the difference between Pelagic Trail Deluxe and BDE?
Pelagic Trail Deluxe combines Daedalus sharks with Sataya dolphins, Fury Shoal coral gardens and night dives, Elphinstone, and — exclusively — dugong snorkeling at Abu Dabbab on Friday. Open to all levels including Open Water. BDE focuses exclusively on three offshore shark reefs (Brothers, Daedalus, Elphinstone) with higher shark density, bigger pelagic action, and deeper dives. AOWD + 50 dives required for BDE. Choose Pelagic Trail Deluxe for variety and wildlife diversity; choose BDE for maximum shark diving intensity.
