Scalloped hammerheads in the Red Sea

The Red Sea population of scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) is one of the most reliably encountered in the world at recreational diving depths. Unlike Galápagos or Cocos Island, where hammerheads are present but often at depth or strong current, Daedalus Reef concentrates schools on the Blue Trail at 15–20 metres — accessible to Open Water certified divers from May through October.

Species Size Behaviour Red Sea sites
Scalloped hammerhead Up to 4m Schools of 20–100+, cleaning station visits at dawn Daedalus (primary), Brothers
Great hammerhead Up to 6m Solitary, occasional, deeper water Elphinstone, St Johns (rare)
Smooth hammerhead Up to 4m Occasional, pelagic, cooler months Open water, northern routes

Of the three species present in the Red Sea, scalloped hammerheads are the target — and Daedalus Reef is where the schooling behaviour is most consistent. The reef acts as a cleaning station: hammerheads arrive at first light to have parasites removed by cleaner wrasse before dispersing into open water by mid-morning.

“We had 40 hammerheads pass at 18 metres on the Blue Trail at Daedalus — the school circled for nearly 12 minutes. Nobody moved. Nobody needed to.”

— Ahmed, dive guide aboard MY JPMarine

Where to dive with hammerheads — site by site

Three southern offshore reefs produce consistent hammerhead encounters. Each has a different profile, depth range, and optimum visit window.

Reef Hammerhead depth Peak months Certification Other species
🦈 Daedalus Reef Blue Trail 15–20m
Red Trail 25–40m
May–Oct (schools) OWD (Blue Trail)
AOWD (Red Trail)
Oceanic whitetips, silkies, grey reef
Brothers Islands 20–35m Jun–Sep AOWD recommended Threshers (dawn), oceanic whitetips, silkies
Elphinstone Reef 25–40m Year-round (occasional) AOWD required Oceanic whitetips (reliable), great hammerhead (rare)

Daedalus Reef is 90 km offshore into the southern Red Sea — far enough from shore to see consistent pelagic traffic. The north plateau is the schooling zone. Hammerheads arrive at dawn, and the Blue Trail puts OWD divers in the water at 15–18m during peak encounters. Brothers Islands add thresher sharks at the cleaning station on the wall at first light — a different species, same principle.

Best months for hammerhead diving in the Red Sea

Month Hammerheads Typical depth Water temp Verdict
Jan–Mar Absent or very rare 22–24°C Not the target season
Apr First individuals appear 25–35m 24–26°C Early — worth booking
May–Jun Schools forming, shallow 15–25m 26–28°C ✔ Best for OWD divers
Jul–Aug Peak numbers, schools deep 25–40m 28–30°C ✔ Best for AOWD divers
Sep–Oct Schools + whitetip peak 15–30m 27–29°C ✔ Best all-round window
Nov–Dec Dispersing, numbers drop 24–26°C Whitetips remain strong

September and October are the broadest window — hammerhead schools are still present from the summer peak, oceanic whitetip sharks are building toward their October–January peak, and water temperature sits at a comfortable 27–29°C in a 3mm wetsuit. For European divers with school-holiday constraints, July and August produce the highest numbers but sharks hold deeper — AOWD unlocks the Red Trail formations.

Which itinerary to choose for hammerhead diving

MY JPMarine runs two itineraries that include Daedalus Reef as a primary hammerhead site. The choice depends on your certification and what else you want from the week.

Itinerary Cert. required Hammerhead sites Other highlights From
🦈 Pelagic Trail OWD & above Daedalus Blue Trail, Elphinstone Sataya dolphins, oceanic whitetips 813 €
Golden Mix AOWD required Daedalus Red + Blue Trail St Johns reefs, Zabargad, Sataya — full south 813 €
BDE — Brothers, Daedalus, Elphinstone AOWD + 50 dives Daedalus Red Trail, Brothers Islands Threshers at dawn, oceanic whitetips, deep walls [PRICE] €

For a first hammerhead trip from Europe, the Pelagic Trail is the right starting point — OWD certified, includes Daedalus Blue Trail hammerhead dives, Elphinstone oceanic whitetips, and the Sataya Dolphin House in a single 7-night week. If you hold AOWD and want the deepest schooling formations, the Golden Mix adds the Red Trail and the full southern Red Sea circuit. Note: the Golden Mix ends permanently after the 2026 season.

FAQ

Questions we get every week

The primary site is Daedalus Reef, 90 km offshore in the southern Red Sea. Scalloped hammerheads school at the north plateau — at 15–20m on the Blue Trail (OWD divers) and 25–40m on the Red Trail (AOWD divers). Brothers Islands and Elphinstone Reef produce occasional encounters, primarily at greater depth. All three sites are covered on MY JPMarine itineraries.
May and June are best for OWD divers — schools form at shallower depth (15–25m) and are most accessible. July and August see peak numbers but sharks hold deeper (25–40m) — AOWD unlocks these formations. September and October offer the broadest window: hammerheads still present, oceanic whitetips building toward their peak, water temperature 27–29°C. Outside May–October, hammerheads are rarely seen at Daedalus.
No — Open Water certified divers dive the Blue Trail at Daedalus Reef (15–20m) and encounter hammerheads from May through October. The Pelagic Trail itinerary is open to OWD. However, Advanced Open Water unlocks the Red Trail (25–40m) where the densest schooling formations occur in July and August. The PADI AOWD course can be completed aboard mid-trip — €280 additional. The Golden Mix requires AOWD.
During peak season (May–October) at Daedalus Reef, schools of 20 to 100+ individuals are regularly encountered on the Blue Trail. Numbers depend on month, time of dive, and current conditions. Dawn dives at the cleaning station consistently produce the largest groups. Encounters are not guaranteed — these are wild animals in open ocean — but Daedalus has one of the most reliable schooling patterns of any accessible site worldwide.
Yes. Scalloped hammerheads are not aggressive toward divers and have no documented unprovoked attacks at Daedalus or Brothers Islands. MY JPMarine provides a dedicated shark dive briefing before every Daedalus dive — covering species behaviour, positioning, buoyancy, and safety signals. All dives are led by experienced guides. PADI certified · HEPCA member · CDWS licensed.
Both include Daedalus Reef as a primary hammerhead site. The Pelagic Trail is accessible from OWD and focuses on pelagic encounters — hammerheads, oceanic whitetips at Elphinstone, and spinner dolphins at Sataya. The Golden Mix requires AOWD, adds the Red Trail deep formations, and extends across the full southern Red Sea including St Johns and Zabargad. The Golden Mix ends permanently after 2026. Both depart Saturday from Port Ghalib, from €813 per person all-inclusive.

Hammerheads, whitetips & threshers — 5 hours from Europe. From €813.
