Flying After Diving in the Red Sea — DAN Guidelines for Liveaboard Guests

A Red Sea liveaboard week means repetitive diving, so your Saturday flight must respect DAN no-fly guidance and the MY JPMarine transfer schedule.

DAN flying after diving guidelines

DAN’s published guidance separates a single no-decompression dive from repetitive diving. A liveaboard week falls into the repetitive diving category because guests normally complete several dives per day across several days.

Diving situation DAN minimum surface interval before flying How to apply it aboard MY JPMarine
Single no-decompression dive Minimum 12 hours Not the normal liveaboard pattern
Multiple dives per day or multiple days of diving Minimum 18 hours Applies to a full Red Sea liveaboard week
Decompression diving, heliox, or trimix Substantially longer than 18 hours Follow your computer, training agency guidance, and medical advice

Read the original DAN flying after diving guidance before booking tight flights.

“Good diving the Red Sea with a very friendly dive leader. The crew is amazing. The food was very tasty, the chef is a keeper! Very good value for money. I would not go on any other boat if I go back to the Red Sea one day.”

— Anne M · BDE itinerary, MY JPMarine · Verified review, Liveaboard.com

How this applies to a Red Sea liveaboard week

A normal Red Sea liveaboard is nitrogen-heavy compared with one or two casual shore dives. Guests may complete 3–4 dives per day, including deeper reef dives depending on route, certification, weather, and guide decision.

✔️ A week of repetitive diving should be treated as an 18-hour minimum no-fly situation.

✔️ If your dive computer shows a longer no-fly time, follow the computer.

✔️ If you have symptoms that may suggest decompression sickness, seek medical advice and do not board a flight.

Send your flight plan before booking if you are unsure about timing.

Friday last dive and Saturday departure schedule

The boat can return to harbour on Friday afternoon or Saturday early morning, depending on the program. The final dive is planned around route conditions, harbour timing, and safe no-fly planning.

Day / timing What happens Guest planning note
Friday Last dive is completed before the cruise ends Start counting your surface interval after surfacing from the final dive
Friday afternoon or Saturday early morning Boat returns to harbour depending on the program Do not use harbour arrival time as your no-fly calculation
Saturday 08:00 Group bus departs from the boat Guests are dropped to Marsa Alam airport, Marsa Alam hotels, Hurghada airport, and Hurghada hotels
Saturday after transfer Airport arrival depends on destination Book flights after the recommended windows below

Flights to avoid after your liveaboard

Early Saturday flights create two separate risks: not enough surface interval after the final dive, and not enough transfer time after the group bus leaves the boat.

Airport Avoid Recommended booking
Hurghada Airport Morning flights and tight departures before group transfer arrival After 14:00
Marsa Alam Airport Very early Saturday flights After 12:00
Any airport Flights that conflict with your dive computer no-fly time Follow the longer waiting time

This comes from nitrogen loading and decompression sickness risk, not from operator preference.

Flight booking checklist for guests

Use this check before paying for your return ticket. It is easier to choose the right flight now than to rebook after your liveaboard schedule is confirmed.

✔️ Book Hurghada flights after 14:00 on Saturday.

✔️ Book Marsa Alam flights after 12:00 on Saturday.

✔️ Keep the final dive time and your dive computer no-fly time in mind.

✔️ Add one extra night if your preferred flight is too early.

✔️ Review dive insurance before travel. Insurance covering underwater activities is mandatory aboard.

Airport transfers included — within the defined timeframe from Hurghada airport. For timing questions, send your flight number before booking.

FAQ

Questions we get every week

How long after a Red Sea liveaboard should I wait before flying?
For a week of repetitive diving, use DAN’s minimum 18-hour preflight surface interval as the baseline. Follow your dive computer if it shows a longer no-fly time.
Can I book an early Saturday flight from Hurghada?
No. The group bus leaves the boat at 08:00 and Hurghada Airport arrival is around 12:00–14:00. Book Hurghada flights after 14:00.
Can I book a Saturday flight from Marsa Alam?
Yes, but do not book very early flights. Marsa Alam Airport arrival is normally around 10:00–12:00, so book flights after 12:00.
Does Nitrox change the flying-after-diving rule?
Nitrox does not mean you can ignore no-fly guidance. Use your dive computer, stay within your certification limits, and follow the longer waiting time if shown.
What if my computer shows a longer no-fly time than 18 hours?
Follow the computer. DAN’s 18-hour guidance is a minimum for repetitive no-decompression diving, not a personal clearance to fly.
What if I feel unwell before my flight?
Do not fly with symptoms that may suggest decompression sickness. Seek medical advice and tell the dive guide or boat team immediately.
