Why Marsa Alam — closer to the sites that matter

Marsa Alam is the only practical starting point for the southern Red Sea’s signature dive sites. Daedalus Reef, Brothers Islands, Elphinstone, Sataya Dolphin House — all of them are closer, faster to reach and more productively dived from Marsa Alam Marina than from any other Egyptian port.

Site From Marsa Alam Marina From Hurghada Time saved
Daedalus Reef ~8h overnight 14–16h Full diving day saved
Elphinstone Reef ~1h 6–7h Half a diving day
Brothers Islands ~12h overnight 18–20h Full diving day saved
Sataya Dolphin House ~4h south 10–12h Half a diving day
Rocky Island · Zabargad Viable in 7 nights Not practical in 7 nights Makes entire route possible

For the Golden Mix and Deep South itineraries, departing from Hurghada is simply not practical within a 7-night trip. The far southern sites — Rocky Island and Zabargad — are exclusively accessible on a liveaboard departing from Marsa Alam. Southern Red Sea sites also receive fewer visiting liveaboards: Daedalus Reef typically has 3–5 boats anchored simultaneously, compared to 20 or more at northern sites during peak season.

“We reached Daedalus on Monday morning and then we were in the water with hammerheads. From Hurghada that first dive wouldn’t have happened this fast.”

For a first liveaboard from Marsa Alam, the Pelagic Trail is the right starting point — open to OWD, covers three signature southern Red Sea sites in one week. AOWD divers wanting the deepest access to Daedalus and the full southern circuit should consider the Golden Mix — which ends permanently after the 2026 season.

FAQ

Questions we get every week

All DiveSafariMaster departures leave from Marsa Alam Marina — a purpose-built marina approximately 65 km south of Marsa Alam city. The marina has dedicated liveaboard berths, a hotel and restaurants. Transfer from Marsa Alam airport (RMF) takes approximately 45 minutes and is included in every trip price. Full transfer details →
Marsa Alam International Airport (RMF) is the closest — approximately 45 minutes from Marsa Alam Marina. Direct flights operate from London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Milan and other European cities. Hurghada airport (HRG) has more frequent European connections and is also served with included transfer — approximately 3 hours. Both airports are included for Saturday arrivals between 12:00 and 18:00.
Transit time is the critical difference. From Marsa Alam Marina, Daedalus Reef is an 8-hour overnight sail — the boat arrives in time for the first dive in the morning. From Hurghada the same journey takes 14–16 hours, burning an entire diving day before a single dive has been done. For the Golden Mix and Deep South itineraries, which include Rocky Island and Zabargad far to the south, departing from Hurghada is simply not practical within a 7-night trip.
Four itineraries depart Marsa Alam Marina in 2026: the Pelagic Trail (OWD and above, from €813), the BDE shark route (AOWD + 50 dives, from €813), the Golden Mix (AOWD, from €813 — final season 2026), and the Deep South — Secrets of Zabargad (AOWD, from €938). All depart Saturday to Saturday.
The Pelagic Trail is open to Open Water certified divers and above — OWD divers dive the Blue Trail at Daedalus (15–20m) while AOWD divers run the Red Trail (25–40m) simultaneously. The BDE, Golden Mix and Deep South itineraries require Advanced Open Water with a minimum of 50 logged dives. PADI AOWD courses are available aboard mid-trip for €280.
